The key difference is that, whenever you cast an adventure spell and it resolves, it exiles itself (the card goes on an adventure, according to MTG rules)
It allows you to look at and play the top card of your library at any time, and you pay life rather than pay the mana for spells you cast this way
Luckily, it looks like Tarkir: Dragonstorm 's release is about to change things for the better, especially because of how the set is handling its Planeswalkers
Beyond just card evaluation topics that leverage creature size, in terms of deck building, having the mindset of 'trying to have slightly more lands (because cards from 4 mana onwards are clearly strong)' and 'being conscious of preparing ways to use mana in the late game' will likely make it easier to win mirrors and the like
